All Ultimate Performance Pads (patent pending) are enclosed in John Woods Products hand-woven and custom designed blankets for the Western, English or Aussie rider. All prices include blankets, hogans (where applicable), and two panels per set. All blankets have 1/2 to 3/4 inch 100% natural wool fiber as recommended by Dr. Tim Bartlett, veterinarian and top reiner, in his comments on horse back pain in Horse & Rider, November 1996 (page 63, comment #3).

Each ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE PAD contains 2 weight and energy distributing panels comprised of high-tech aerospace materials.
TOP LAYER - high density aerospace shock absorbing Ensulite.
MIDDLE LAYER - weight-distributing polyurethane and ABS panels that reduce the pounds per square inch of concussion and spread it over a larger area to minimize pressure points and heat related sores.
BOTTOM LAYER - aerospace shock absorbing Ensulite that allows evaporation and moisture wicking, increasing air flow and heat reduction of hot spots
THE CENTER INSERTED PADS are individual weight and energy distributing. Pads are separate inserts of the same high-tech Ensulite, ABS and polyurethane with a 1/4 inch gap surrounding them for maximum air flow, total freedom of motion for torque distributed by shoulder, back, and loin during normal work and peak performance.

Each panel has twelve moving parts per side that promote optional weight distribution. These panels conform to your horse and saddle, enhancing the natural rhythm of your horse's unrestricted movement. This cushioning restores proper motion by reduction of stress and trauma to back, shoulders, and loin, offering breathability and moisture flow for less heat build up.

John Woods Products Western Square Blankets are hand woven in New Zealand wool with hand woven opening in top for panels for a close fit with vent, slotted at gullet, wear pads and 1/2" wool covered back. All western blankets come with 30 X 60" hogan and two Ultimate Performance Pads installed.

The Mechanics of Ultimate Performance Pads

Adhesion vs. Stress

Adhesion is the force applied to the materials together. In specific adhesion, its the molecular attraction between contracting surfaces. Mechanical adhesion occures when applies to rough or porous surfaces. Effective adhesion combines specific and mechanical to form optimum strength vs. stress.

Stress is the force applied to the materials through four basic types.

  • Tensile is exerted equally over the entire surface in a pull direction bonding is for optimum strength.

  • Cleavage is force concentrated at one edge and exerts a prying force. The other edge is now under zero stress.

  • Peel is concentrated along a thin line at the edge. Bonding has a flexible surface to stay out in front of the mating surface.

  • Adhesives allow uniform distrubition of stress over the entire bonded area. This eliminates stress concentration caused by rivets and holes needed for mechinical fasteners, screwing, and drilling. This provides maxium resistance to vibration fatigue and increases the total weight breaking surface.
